Yankari Afrobeat Collective

Born from the mind and blood of composer and bandleader Segun Akano, a lifelong student of Nigerian music and culture, Yankari Afrobeat Collective is more than a band—it’s a movement. Since 2015, they’ve carried the fire of Afrobeat forward, pushing the genre beyond its roots while staying true to its soul. With a sound built on the rhythmic foundation of Yoruba, Igbo, and other Nigerian languages, Yankari don’t just play music—they're telling the story of a nation, past and future. A relentless, high-energy force on stage, they channel the raw power of Fela Kuti’s pioneering vision while forging their own path—driven by rhythm, rebellion, and the boundless creativity of Nigeria’s rich cultural landscape.
Yankari Afrobeat Collective is a powerhouse of sound and spirit. Rooted in the wisdom of Yoruba adages and driven by razor-sharp Afrobeat grooves, their sound fuses intricate, jazz-infused horn lines with the unstoppable momentum of an interlocking five-piece rhythm section. A chorus of voices and the deep pulse of organ complete the sonic force.
Fresh off standout performances on RTÉ’s Tommy Tiernan Show, Radio 1’s Arena, Cork Jazz Festival, All Together Now, and Tradfest, Yankari is gearing up to unleash their debut album on label Love Universal - wrapped in artwork by the legendary Baba Lemi Ghariokwu, the original king of Afrobeat cover art.
At the heart of their live show lies a relentless groove—bass, drums, and guitars locked in like a machine, delivering a precision-driven, high-voltage experience. But this isn’t just about music. This is a mission. Every Yankari performance is a call to move, to celebrate, to connect. A reminder that, in the space between the speakers, we are one.
